Lessons from the Killdeer

What extent do we go to protect?
To protect our heart and mind?
To protect our family from bodily harm? From attacks on their soul, heart, and mind?

We can gain a lot of knowledge by watching the Killdeer. The Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) builds its nest on the ground in open areas. Here they have good visibility to see threats coming their way. These birds are well known for their shrill kill-deer call. They have great camouflage as they sit on their nest and often undetected until they move.

Be Watchful

A pair of Killdeer will establish its home on the ground in an area where they can see danger coming. They sit on their nest keeping a watchful eye out for potential threats. Remaining vigilant is key for the Killdeer, but even more so for us as protectors of our home and family. Threats can come from anywhere and have many different shapes and forms. We must be alert and stand on guard for the threats that the devil will send our way.

Stand Firm

When threats come and attack our family, what do we do? Do we give up and allow the threat to damage our family, or do we stand in the way? Here we can learn again from the Killdeer. As a potential threat approaches the nest, the Killdeer will stand and take a few steps toward the threat. This places them between threat and their nest. When the enemy approaches. When trials come. When a threat begins walking our way. We must stand firm and get between the threat and our family.

Draw Fire

Finally, we must draw fire. We watch for danger standing firm to protect our family, but when the threat gets too close we may need to draw fire away from our family. This is a sacrificial move. When the threat gets too close, the Killdee will shrill and act injured as it moves away from the nest. This is to capture the attention of the threat and draw it away from the nest. All the while the bird is watching over the nest and will swoop back and attack by dive bombing at the threat if necessary.

Be Prepared

We must be ready to sacrifice and protect our family.
Satan is running rampant. He is out to attack and destroy our family. It is our responsibility to be like the Killdee.
Be watchful and vigilant. Stand firm. Draw fire when necessary.

Be alert, on guard, and watchful. Stand firm in the faith. Be brave. Be strong. Be courageous. Be a man. Do everything in love.
– I Corinthians 16:13-14
